Review of An American Crime (2007) by Kay C — 12 Feb 2009
Incredibly well done and incredibly difficult to watch. Knowing this was a true story just made viewing it all the more painful.
The story of a suburban housewife who imprisoned and tortured one of her foster children, this is a film that could truly make you lose your faith in humanity. The complicity of the entire family and the neighbourhood children, the age of the kids who participated in the torture, the way they truly seemed to view Sylvia as somehow subhuman, her sister's inability to help - all of these horrors are portrayed with agonizing realism. A truly horrifying reminder of how ugly people can be toward one another.
