Review of An American Carol (2008) by Lance L — 04 Oct 2008
Ever since I first saw the trailer for this movie, I've wanted to see this film, which is from the people that created Airplane, which is a comedy classic.
This film spoofs the story of Scrooge, who is portrayed as a Micheal Moore-like filmmaker who wants to boycott July 4, due to the war in Afganistan. The spirits appear in the form of George Washington, General Patton and JFK. Even Bill O'Rielly and Country Music singer Trace Adkins have appearances.
One does not have to be someone that supports the Conservative Politics to enjoy the film, in fact I know several people that want to see the film just because it makes fun of the ACLU, Rosie O'Donnell, and even college professors, who break into a song number about being stuck in the 1960s with their teaching ideals.
One funny moment in the film is when there is an attack on a courtroom, where zombies are trying to break apart a stone wll hanging of the Ten Commandments. The Moore character (named Michael Malone) asks "Why are you shooting these people?" General Patton replies by saying "These aren't people, they are the ACLU.".
The only complaint I have in the film is the view that true Americans listen to Country Music and watch NASCAR. Um..yeah, I'm a conservative but don't like Country Music and don't think NASCAR is a real sport. Nonetheless, you will see some of the old Airplane gags throughout the film, and at times, just becomes redundant.
Overall, the film was very funny, and I was glad I ended up seeing it. I saw it during a matinee, and there were around fifty people in the theater (which is good for matinee), and most were weraing their McCain/Palin pins, but it was good to see a movie that actually makes fun of the politics of the Left, since they get away with making fun of the Right all the time in Hollywood. This is not a typical Right Winged movie with no plot or can't be enjoyed (like the horrible Christian movies that get put out that are shown in like 10 theaters).
This is one funny movie and Kevin Farley (Chris's brother) reminded me so much of his brother, but yet had his own style as well. And how can anyone not like a movie with Leslie Nielsen in it?
