Review of An American Carol (2008) by William M — 06 Oct 2008
It was nice to get a movie that was political, but NOT incredibly left. However, the plot felt too much like a collection of potpourri ideas glued together with the "Christmas Carol" format. The jokes were also kinda lacking. Even though there were a couple good laughs, a lot of them get really repetitive (Michael Moore is fat and smelly, and documentaries aren't real movies) which get old fast.
Kevin Farley definitely has a lot of his brother Chris in him. He's funny to watch, and is always the center of attention in scenes. The rest of the cast was also good, assembling what conservatives Hollywood has to offer (really only a handful). This actually helps the movie a great deal, as simple comedic roles are filled with great actor names like Kelsey Grammer and Jon Voight. Leslie Nielsen's presence is also a good contribution, and adds to the slapstick Airplane comedy (as long as you like that kind of thing).
I guess in the end, this movie doesn't really amount to enough. Even though there are plenty of good points among all the plot confusion , it's hard to take any of it seriously when the film is so goofy and doesn't take itself seriously enough. I commend David Zucker for having the guts to put together a conservative based comedy, but it will hardly make enough of a ripple to reach the ears of anyone of importance.
