Review of An American Carol (2008) by Christian C — 07 Oct 2008
I loved this movie; I really think it's hard to combine slapstick with a serious message, and David Zucker managed it. In a way this reminds me of Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, inasmuch a it had to blend physical comedy with a serious message. In the case of PT&A, it's that we are all, at the end of the day, "our brother's keeper.".
In the case of AAC, it's that we need to take a step back every once in a while and appreciate not only the good that our country has done, but the good it can do, and how fragile some of our infrastructure is to those out there who really do wish us harm for no better reason than they are threatened by our Western Values.
And it's funny. The kind of funny wherein I'd laugh out loud at some outrageous bit of spoofery, and then tell my husband that "I take that back.".
"Once you've laughed," he replies, "you can't take it back.".
This happened a lot: physical comedy encircling a larger truth about the human experience. Loved it.
