Review of An American Carol (2008) by Johnny P — 22 Dec 2008
Funnyman director David Zucker ("Airplane!". "The Naked Gun") has really lost his timing and his way on this clunker. Zucker, an avowed conservative, uses an all conservative cast of actors including Kelsey Grammar, James Woods, Bill O'Reilly, Dennis Hopper, Leslie Nielson (of course), and even Gary Coleman.
Regardless of your political bent, you have to admit no other filmaker is more ripe for satire than the outspoken liberal beardo Michael Moore. Moore is portrayed here by Chris Farley's brother Kevin who eerily displays tons of his brother's physical characteristics while somehow missing all the funny ones.
The problem Zucker has here is that all of his criticisms of the left are generally right on and could be made to be funny, but not here. The script takes forever to set up the premises, losing the audience before the mediocre punchlines and the whole thing gets mired in it's own didacticism.
This thing missed the broad side of a barn.
