Review of An American Carol (2008) by Steven N — 04 Feb 2009
With "An American Carol" David Zucker the guy who brought us "Airplane," "The Naked Gun," and "Scary Movie" brings us a light-hearted screwball comedy, from a right-wing perspective.
The story follows a very Michael Moore-esque director who is hired by terrorists to direct their new anti-American film. their ultimate goal however has little to do with movie making, and more to do with blowing stuff up.
Putting aside politics, the biggest problem with "An American Carol" is that it simply isn't very funny. There are a couple jokes that sort of made me grin. Not a complete grin mind you, but one of those half grins - more of a smirk really.
Beyond that though, pretty much every joke falls flat. I haven't really found one of these Zucker-spoof-comedies long in a very long time. It's a hard sort of comedy to crack. When it works it's fantastic, but when it fails it fails miserably.
Toss a heavy-handed, bordering on annoying political message on top of the unfunny jokes and you've got yourself a pretty awful movie-going experience. My advice is that you skip this one. It doesn't really matter what side of the aisle you happen to be on, it doesn't change the fact that "An American Carol" just isn't a very good movie.
