Review of An American Carol (2008) by Kenny O — 06 Feb 2009
I don't really know what to say after watching this. At first, it seemed like a '70's throwback, using ethnic and racial stereotypes which are inappropriate under today's standards of decency, but were funny nonetheless.
Unfortunately, despite the funny moments (and, unless you adhere to the political correctness mentality, there are certainly many of them), this movie ultimately fails because such moments are outweighed and outnumbered by the outright stupid moments.
Instead of being a movie which pokes fun at all (which it tries to be at times), it comes off as an insane evangelical rant against the radical right's very much inaccurate picture of American liberalism.
Ultimately, this movie was made for the folks whom Tim Robbins ridicules in his Bob Roberts spoof. If you're a Christian conservative, the movie might be just what the doctor ordered. If you're anything else, you might need to take a deep breath -- enjoy the funny moments, put your politics aside, and feel free to roll your eyes most of the time.
