Review of Amy (2015) by Michael L — 03 Jul 2015
A hauntingly powerful portrait of the late singer, "Amy" is one of this years' documentaries to watch.
Directed by Asif Kapadia, we watch the rise and fall of Amy Winehouse. It is a fitting and appropriate documentation of Winehouse's breakthrough and personal drug abuse and bulimia.
As we watch the movie, we are frequently reminded of the legendary voice Ms. Winehouse had with samples of songs such as "Stronger than me" and "Rehab" being played throughout the movie. It is truly remarkable how her words written on a piece of paper would turn out to become the hits we know today. However, it is also incredibly sad to realise how that talent has now left and there was probably no one in the audience who didn't shed a tear during this film.
Indeed, the drug abuse documented also features input from her then-husband, Blake as well as her parents and friends. We see how this team were unsuccessful in bringing back a stable Amy Winehouse before her tragic passing in 2011, a day not many of have forgotten.
Overall, Kapadia deserves his praise and anyone who chooses to watch this film will immediately reminded of the incredible talent that Amy Winehouse had. RIP.
