Review of Amy (2015) by Jennifer R — 12 Jul 2015
The Amy documentary was especially worthy because the film director, Asif Kapadia, was able to earn the trust of Amy Winehouses' closest circle. Because the circumstances around the end of her life where such that she died from alcohol poisoning - and because she was met with such public derision for her drug and alcohol abuse - having these closest people in her life tell the real story of what was going on with Amy very much added to our understanding of her challenges.
The other piece of this was the fact that she grew up with a friend who happened to take a lot of video footage, so we were we were able to see the Amy who was growing up and understand many insights into what shaped her path.
I was impressed by the fact that she was absorbed into jazz, as well as of the impact of her duo with Tony Bennett. Ultimately the movie demonstrated how Amy faced and coped with pain while embodying two truly remarkable gifts of innovative, transparent songwriting and confident, soulfoul singing.
Finally, though her Rehab hit was endlessly ironic: it was also clearly an unmet cry for help.
