Review of Amy (2015) by Sarah F — 17 Jul 2015
I was never a huge Amy Winehouse fan other than having her tunes stuck in my head from time to time. But I came away from this film with newfound respect and understanding of her as a person and an artist.
The documentary gives a view to Amy's life, friends, family, romances and business relationships - which are all intertwined. You have to like her - she was so real, and disinterested in her fame.
In fact, fame was her undoing in so many ways. My favorite part of the movie was seeing how the songs she wrote were taken directly from her life and romances. Everything was personal. Addiction is both tragic and stupid in any circumstance, Amy's case is a brutal, brutal example of someone who had and could have had everything- being destroyed.
You are left asking the question her family and friends all were asking: "Amy, why?".
