Review of Amy (2015) by Judith B — 17 Jul 2015
Riveting portrait of Amy as one of her generation's greatest unfulfilled raw talents who was destroyed by an almost cliche' vortex of rock 'n' roll bad behaviors. Sexism resulted in her severe bulimia which was not taken seriously by anyone around her.
Youthfull bad girl/bad boy romanticism led to a lethal obsessive relationship w/a toxic drug addict who lured a pot-smoking young girl into riding shotgun to & financing his narcotic drug addiction which resulted in a near fatal OD to Amy years before her premature demise to alcohol.
No matter how much Blake Fielder endangered Amy's career and life, nobody seemed to be able to extract her from his clutches. Thru all this, Amy's sheer star power and great talent resulted in a huge pop hit which resulted in international fame & admiration --- and a huge bank account to indulge in all the decadence & lack of discipline to incur her ultimately fatal death by alcohol poisoning, On the plus side, this movie is full of beautiful music which Amy composed & sang which only serves as an excruciating epitaph to a brilliant chanteuse and composer who had only scratched the tip of the iceberg of her truly monumental talent.
Amy's story is told with lengthy commentary by childhood friends, managers, her father Mitch Winehouse and many who her knew her gleaned from reportedly 500 hours of interviews & concert footage.
Bring a hankie. This is a tragedy.
