Review of Amour (2012) by Susan M — 30 Jan 2013
An incredible tour de force, this film is the most depressing movie I have ever seen. I am over 70 and it hurt. What if? The redeeming value (other than the beauty of the film) is that I WILL do a Living Will /Advance Directive.
.yesterday. Both actors deserve the Academy Award (let me say here that it is a thin year when a romantic comedy--Silver Linings--gets a nomination!) Amour/Love, although officially a German/Austrian film, is done in French and in the French style--long lingering scenes, quiet, no background music (other than some pertinent piano pieces) .
..just a dusty Paris apt. (which few could afford these days), an increasingly messy kitchen, Anne's bedside containing more and more medical supplies and pills. Old photos and memorabilia and a sad grand piano await life by the living room windows.
Life at its end, and it ain't pretty despite the efforts of the heroic husband, Georges There will be much discussion after seeing this film, count on it.
