Review of Amour (2012) by Jon A — 18 Feb 2013
There are certainly interesting and moving parts of this movie, and the two leads give excellent performances. But overall, I'm not sure what Haneke was trying to say with this. There is some (IMO) unnecessary ambiguity with the story towards the end, and at least a couple of overlong, baffling sequences.
Haneke also continues the trend of European directors (think Refn or Tarr) to film scenes where nothing is happening, or something very uninteresting is happening, which sort of drives me insane. It's also filmed a lot like a play.
The camera doesn't move much, there are almost no tracking shots and very little panning. It just kind of a boring way to film, IMO.
