Review of Amour (2012) by Frank R — 18 Nov 2013
I cannot rate this film, really, because I have not been able to see the whole film on DVD (Netflix), because both times I have tried the subtitles were so sparse, even sort of grudgingly minimalist. Whole, extended conversations go by with only what seem to be fragments of what should be a translation.
That first meeting between Trintignant and Huppert is subtitled with small pieces: " you know him well," "we performed on Sept. 28," " they ran tests," and something about an operation.
Huh? Who is Huppert to him? Is she a doctor? His daughter? I like this director's films. I want to see the entire film, but I do not understand French, and the subtitles provided do not help; they only frustrate, and that is not why one watches movies.
