What a debut film from Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu. He bursts onto the scene with a great script in hand from Guillermo Arriaga and his (now) signature narrative style to deliver one of the best straightforward dramas of the decade (2000's).
Amores Perros, which literally translates to "Love's a Bitch" is about as heavy as movies come. Like...Requiem for a Dream-like heavy. Just like 21 Grams and Babel, the story revolves around one incident that connects three groups of people in an unpredictable way.
Inarritu really knows people's emotions like few directors working today. The movie is about how dark the human spirit can be. As is usually the case, Inarritu gets the most out of all of his actors.
Everybody does a great job with their role which is extremely important in a film that takes itself so seriously. The brutality in this movie is so unbelievably real that at times I found it hard to watch.
Another complaint I would have is that the movie is a little too long and drags in the middle a bit. Other than that, Amores Perros is probably the most dynamite film debut from a director in quite some time.
Inarritu crafts his story of human brutality with such style and grace it's hard not to appreciate.
