Review of Amores Perros (2000) by Rohitashwa S — 21 Nov 2010
It's easy to see why Inarittu's fearless debut of life, loss and dog-fighting that pullulate the streets of Mexico was hailed as 'the Mexican Pulp Fiction' upon its release. The immediate impact of the 1994 classic is all over Amores Perros.
However, Amores Perros, taking off from the basic premise of how a freak car accident affects the lives of otherwise unrelated people, caters more to a melodramatic polish than Pulp Fiction ever did or could.
It is the cinema of glossy surface material, the kind of cinema that is itself so goofily in love with its flaunting coolness that it makes us helplessly root for individuals we would generally shrink to look at.
'Amores Perros' tries desperately to be a blast. It suceeds, mostly.
