Review of Amores Perros (2000) by Jason R — 24 Jan 2011
"You want to make God laugh? Tell him your plans.".
Personlly, the first hour was rather dissapointing and senile. Bernal is a tremendous actor and he does great in it, but the actress who played Susana was kind of a buzz kill. The whole Octavio y Susana storyline was leaky and flawed, but maybe we were supposed to see it that way. I dont know, but I sympathized with Ramilo more. So after the first story of obsessive compulsive adolescents, we move on to more crafty and original adult characters. The Daniel y Valeria storyline was actually quite intriguing, and you really delve into this story psychologically and try to understand the problem. This second 3rd of the movie also deals with infadelity and lust, and we see how these sort of relationships can really backfire. The final story was absolutely brilliant and served as the climax to it all! El Chivo's story is so much fun to watch and I almost wished Innarritu did a whole movie on him instead. Emilio Echevarria gave such a graceful performance as a homeless man who's also an assasin. Pretty Crazy. The ending to this movie is quite graceful and comes together elegantly. It's similar to movies like Traffic, but not quite on par. However, there's still good reason to watch this even though it's slow at times. Overall;.
Octavio y Susana: 2.5 stars.
Daniel y Valeria: 4.5 stars.
El Chivo: 5 stars.
Average Total: 4 Stars.
It may not seem right to judge it separately, but to me, it was the only way I could come to terms how effective a feature it was.
