Much like another one of Inarritu's films, 21 Grams, this crime drama has the capacity to be riveting and admirably ambitious, yet too frequently goes off the rails. The multiple storylines that are presented here are connected shoddily, sometimes in ways that feel forced or convenient, and some of the metaphors are simply too overt to appreciate.
