Review of Amistad (1997) by Buck K — 17 Feb 2008
This is a very entertaining film about the slave trade and its moral implications, and legal status under American Law. The age old question of treating slaves as non people, and only as property, in law, is at the basis of this question.
It is very hard for us to fathom today how such a question could be even posed. But is was like this and a very bloody civil war was fought over this very question. In the end, even in 1839 the Supreme Court finally made the correct decision.
And we are much the better for it.
