Review of Amistad (1997) by Jason Z — 15 Mar 2008
Really an excellent film, one I always end up watching at least a few times a year. Quite disturbingly violent, it definitely pulls no punches with the brutalities of the slave trade. Outstanding performances all around, subtle Morgan Freeman, likeable and at times quite funny McConaughey, excellent and proud Djimon Hounsou, and my personal favorite, Anthony Hopkins as JQ Adams.
The argument presented by Hopkins at the end of this film is one of his best scenes in any movie I can think of him in. Quite inspiring. The only reason I cannot rate this one higher is the awful historical inconsistencies, not so much during the eventsof the movie, of which there werea few, but more of the aftermath.
But you can do your own research for that, or dont and you can enjoy this film even more. Almost forgot, wonderful score by John Williams, butI can think of any bad oneshes done either, especially for a Spielberg project.
If you havent seen this one, you should, you will be moved.
