Review of Amistad (1997) by Nicole M — 04 Jun 2008
Although I had a really bizzaire experience of going to see this film with my family, and then after the film was over, people coming up to us and apologizing for the middle passage, Amistad is a gripping and wonderful movie.
The only caveat is that the history could have been more nuanced. Hounsou should have clinched the best actor nomination that year, and not have been introducing the "best clay animation" or some such trivial category at the Academy Awards.
That was the last time I watched the awards all the way through.
