Review of Amistad (1997) by Michael H — 21 Aug 2008
Stirring, powerful, and arresting. An oustanding picture, sweeping and beautifully directed by Spielberg, with at least three scenes that are breathtaking--the opening images of sweat, rain and captivity, Cinque's gaze to the stars (suggesting more than just the plot point of losing direction) and the prisoner's identification with the story of Christ.
There's more to ponder here than just "white boys being heroic" as many critics have argued.
