Review of Amistad (1997) by David F — 31 Jan 2010
Handsome production based on historic incident starts out strong, and climaxes midway with a recounting of the inhuman treatment of African slaves who end up staging a revolt on a Spanish ship, La Amistad.
The last half-hour is taken up by a somewhat tacked-on summation by Anthony Hopkins' crusty but noble John Quincy Adams - it seems unnecessary, but he's fun to watch. Hounsou is also very impressive as Cinque, the leader of the uprising.
