Review of Amistad (1997) by Byron B — 31 Aug 2010
Incredible story that is well told, and has amazing acting. I wasn't really sure that I wanted to watch Amistad, but I am very glad I did. It is funny, Steven Spielberg has been making some movies lately which I have had no interesting in see, so I sometimes forget what a great director he is, but then I see something like this and it all comes back to me.
Amistad is just a totally incredible film. It is filled with emotion and drama, and several times it feels like being hit in the gut with the images of slaves being mistreated and killed. As for the cast, all I can say is wow.
Freeman, Hopkins, Ejiofor, McConaughey, and how Djimon Hounsou did not get nominated for an oscar for his role is beyond me. Stories such as these are quite often hard to tell properly, they can come off as being over dramatic or way too preachy, but in this case, Spielberg has done a masterful job in conveying the truth of the matter and making it believable and compelling and for that I give him credit.
