Review of Amistad (1997) by Scott P — 30 Jan 2011
You MUST watch this movie if you have not. The acting in this film was incredible by every single actor. My favourite character was Sengbe who was played by Djimon Hounsou. He did an incredible job, it was breath taking.
One of the best performances I have ever seen in a movie. He out beats Morgan Freeman by a landslide. That is not to say that Morgan Freeman did not do a good job and he did. Morgan's character was more reserved in this film.
Matthew McConaughey also did an amazing job. My favourite scene was by Anthony Hopkins, who did an outstanding monologue in the court room to try and free the slaves. Hopkins played John Quincy Adams, the 6th President of The United States of America.
Now for the plot, this was a captivating story that had me hooked form the first scene. Who would believe that the first scene would be a brutal battle between Spanish and African's. It was an incredible opening sequence.
As for Stephen Spielberg, wow, he did a marvellous job directing this movie. This is one of my favourites by him so far (that I've seen). The cinematography in this film was absolutely thrilling. Through the cinematography you can tell this film has top of the line people working on it.
I would recommend this movie to everyone. It shows the harsh realities of slavery in American during the mid 1800's. Also, one more thing to add. The portrayal of not only American, but the world at a crucial time in history, was exquisite.
This film was a true masterpiece. Steven Spielberg is an incredible director.
