Review of Amistad (1997) by Travis T — 29 Jul 2011
A surprisingly entertaining tale of a legal case, which can be a challenging feat. That said, my love of history is probably exploiting my bias on this one. Hopkins is pretty good as John Quincy Adams, but JQA is really used as a kind of narrating figure throughout to kind of help the movie along.
McConaughey is actually kind of good here, while Hounsou is magnificent. Although the slave ship scenes can be disturbing, their historical accuracy helps accentuate the subject matter and the gravity of the situation involved.
The ending is also appropriate and well-chosen.
