Review of Amistad (1997) by Hilly D — 21 Apr 2008
I enjoyed it to some extent, but it tends to drag on. Spielberg is capable of making a truly emotional epic- almost all his great movies are truly emotional epics. But here, the only performers truly showing emotion are the Africans- Matthew McConaughey is passable, Morgan Freeman (surprisingly) isn't given much to do, and while Anthony Hopkins truly embodies his role as John Quincy Adams and delivers a great courtroom speech, it still fails to move us on any level.
There are some beautiful scenes and some great scenes, such as those from Cinque's memories of the slave ship, but for the most part I expected better of Spielberg.
