Review of Amistad (1997) by Corey C — 15 Oct 2008
Not great. When it's not trying to be deeply profound with a simplistic Historically Significant monologue, it's sentimental and garish. I won't deny that the scenes on the ship at the beginning and the flashback near the middle have a great deal of power, but the film surrounding it mostly falls flat, particularly the showy acting from McConaughey and inexplicable Academy Award nominee Anthony Hopkins.
