Review of Amistad (1997) by Matt D — 15 Sep 2014
A rare Steven Spielberg film that I hadn't seen until now...
As a history buff this was right up my alley from the beginning and despite moments of Spielberg at his most heavy-handed I found this to be an engrossing and well made drama that gets to make a hero out of one of our lesser known presidents (John Quincy Adams) and actually dramatize another (Martin Van Buren).
The cast of this flick is sensational although there are moments when the young Matthew McConaughey seems a little out of his depth amongst the veterans.
Now if only someone could explain to me why the African characters only start getting subtitles 30+ minutes into the movie...
