I think it's important to remember the slave trade and the atroscities humans commit against each other, and this movie reminds of that. Some of the scenes were a little smaltzy in how "look-how-not-racist-i-am" they were, but there were a lot of really powerful scenes as well with Djimon Hounsou and images of the middle passage.

Also when Morgan Freeman (ha), a free black man in America, searches the ship and walks through the shackles and sees the blood where the slaves were kept and realizes just how close he was to the same bondage and torture the Africans endured.
