Review of American Wedding (2003) by Michael Y — 31 Jul 2011
The group is back for one more round as the chracters that made them famous. American Wedding isn't perfect, but it's the cast and growing characters we can't get enough of that makes this trilogy good.
JIM AND MICHELLE ARE GETTING MARRIED! Out of school and grown up, we see some of our favourite familiar faces and some hilarious new ones. As the wedding is being planned, the boys' usual shenanigans follows. especially Stifler's. We get a handful of the same old loveable comedy we expect to see because of the first 2 movies, but like the previous 2, American Wedding also finely balances a kind of drama that only works because we know these characters so well. This time we get to see a lighter side of Stifler who is trying to hit of Michelle's sister. The story doesn't have quite the dilemma that the previous 2 movies had, but it has enough to be nice. I would have liked this movie to be a bit more romantic though.
American Wedding looks just as good as the other 2, if not looking a bit cleaner. It looks very natural, with easy cinematography that captures the comedy of the story very well. It's the physical comedy that makes the movies too, and Jesse Dylan did a fine job. Like I said, I wish this movie could have been paced a little better to really capture the romance and drama of a few scenes. But in the end it all works out to be a fine and enjoyable entry in the trilogy.
I'd say that American Wedding is the weakest link in the American Pie trilogy, but it is a happy and hilarious conclusion to the characters we've come to love and the actors that played them so well.
