Review of American Violet (2008) by David H — 19 Apr 2009
Based on a true story, this is a very absorbing film with mesmerizing performances from all involved. Nicole Beharie makes her big screen debut as a young African-American single mother who is wrongly accused of dealing narcotics.
If this film gets enough attention, I believe Ms. Beharie could find herself with an Oscar nomination. Alfre Woodard is also quite wonderful as Beharie's Mother....her strongest work in years. The film has a bit of a "made for tv" feel to it, but it's beautifully done and a very important story that should be seen.
