Review of American Ultra (2015) by Camille L — 19 Aug 2015
It's clearly an underrated movie because people walked into the movie having high expectations or expecting it to be pineapple express meets Bourne. It's not. It's like 300. Love 300 and dumb fun that brings to the table. It's not suppose to be a movie you're suppose to nickpick. Though other movies that I hated this year are also similar movies; this however doesn't have gaping holes in it. Unlike JP, Southpaw, and other crappier but "dumb" fun movies this year; American gets straight to the point. It's suppose to be a fun movie around the idea that a stoner is secretly a secret agent but doesn't know about it.
Simple enough that premise works. As the comedy is delivered in a way I've never seen before. Yes it is black comedy but it is more than that. It's dumb. Turn your brain off, get your head out of your own ass, and stop being pretentious for a while. Don't expect this movie to blow you away or be something special. Enjoy it for it is. A fun movie that meant to create laughs and some cool action scenes.
Overall American Ultra exceeded my expectations and gave me a movie where I can enjoy. Even if that enjoyment is there for a little bit and is meant for less brain cells than more. It's not the next Monty Python and you will hate it if you're expecting it to be. 8.5.
