Review of American Ultra (2015) by Andrew M — 24 Aug 2015
In short: Cool concept, cluttered execution -- essentially at least close to guilty pleasure fodder. The stoner sleeper agent potential does show through in a lot of areas, and many of the action bits, and even a lot of the stoner dialog, is quite enjoyable and worth the watch.
Even the bits with the girlfriend are actually good -- yeah, Kirsten Stewart, it turns out, isn't a bad actress. The major problem is that it actually tries to do too much with it's premise, resulting in major lulls in the action that kill the film's pacing.
John Leguizamo's character is completely superfluous, and Topher Grace's is rather too incompetent to be believably in his position. Still, Eisenberg seems to be having fun, and there was enough laughs and action to keep me entertained.
