Review of American Ultra (2015) by Henry O — 05 Sep 2015
My fiancà (C) and I wanted to see this one as soon as we saw the trailer. Due to bad reviews on this site and the severe lack of show times at our local theaters, I thought it slip away and that might be for the best. However, we finally managed to catch a showing, and I was happy to be surprised by how much I enjoyed it.
Jesse Eisenburg and Kristan Stewart are excellent as an on-screen couple. The sweeter moments between them were a big highlight for me, and kept the insane plot from feeling too out there. You have to have characters you care about in a movie like this. Everyone else is decent in their roles, except for Topher Grace, who for some reason keeps getting villian roles that don't suite his acting strengths. He's not horrible, he just feels out of place.
The action scenes are fun, and the final fight at a supermarket is visceral and ends touchingly. Really the moments of emotion between characters is what makes this stand a little above other stoner comedys, for me, and makes it easy for me to reccomend a viewing.
