Review of American Ultra (2015) by Daniel E — 18 Aug 2015
I really enjoyed this film for the most part and the audience that I sat with seemed to have a lot of fun with American Ultra. The movie never lags or gets boring even when itâ(TM)s at its most dumb. It does a really good job of keeping you engaged with all of the characters involved. The entire cast really gives it their all and that definitely translates on screen. The star here is Jesse Eisenberg, American Ultra allows him to show a much more sensitive and emotional side of himself and it really works. Kristen Stewart is also allowed to show off a different side of herself; her comedic timing was on point and itâ(TM)s just another layer of acting ability that she possesses. Stewartâ(TM)s nuanced performances are always just so masterful. Eisenberg and Stewart share some real sweet emotional moments, but not enough. The love story between the 2 is very much the center of the film and it is what works best, I just needed a little more of it. John Leguizamo provides a lot of funny moments and Connie Britton and Topher Grace came to play as well; Grace is just the perfect asshole villain, he gives it his all. Really the actor who steals this film for me is Walter Goggins, he provides some good humor, but he also shared a nice emotional moment at the end of the film with Eisenberg that really brought this film to a nice conclusion.
Some faults: not all the humor works and some of it was pointless. The last big fight scene gets a little gory and it didnâ(TM)t really feel necessary.
Iâ(TM)m a big Kristen Stewart fan and I really like Jesse Eisenberg as well, so I knew that I would probably like this film when I walked into it, but a lot of it does work. Itâ(TM)s not the best movie of the year and itâ(TM)s not changing the game, but you wonâ(TM)t be bored with it. If youâ(TM)re just looking for a good theater experience, you wonâ(TM)t go wrong with American Ultra.
