Review of American Ultra (2015) by Tyler R — 04 Sep 2015
I really don't know what the point of this film was. Action? Comedy? Rom-Com? Either way you look at it, American Ultra just feels exceptionally juvenile. The film follows two stoners who are hunted by the US government, only for them to realize that they are sleeper agents.
Let me just get it out of the way and say that the acting is bad across the board. Both Eisenberg and Stewart are bland and have zero chemistry, and the rest of the cast doesn't fare much better. The pacing is sluggish, even when things kick in and the action starts.
In terms of pacing, the film comes to sudden halts every now and then to show their relationship issues, which derails any consistent pace that was built up. The film finally chugs along to an ending that you'll see coming, which fits the rest of the film's predictability and sheer pointlessness.
