Review of American Ultra (2015) by Maksim B — 19 Nov 2015
Ouch. Unfunny, unfocused and far from being entertaining, American Ultra is a completely disappointing blend of spy-nerd-action-comedy which has an interesting concept, but a disastrous execution. The story never really lives up to the potential it has and to the initial expectations of audience, especially when having a talent such as Jesse Eisenberg in the leading role.
The story is about a pot-loving loser and his girlfriend, who happens to be part of a secret CIA project. Without suspecting anything, he is a trained killing weapon, but when CIA bureaucrats decide that he is a liability it ordered that he is terminated. Fortunately for Mike (Jesse Eisenberg) his pre-programmed killing abilities are activated and the action part of the movie gets unleashed.
Unfortunately, director Nima Nourizadeh is not capable of keeping American Ultra entertaining for more than 15 minutes, not to mention for the whole length of 99 minutes. Unfunny, with poor acting coming from Kristen Stewart and Topher Grace, this wanna-be-cool movie is nothing but a painfully to watch action. It is only Jesse Eisenberg with his idiotic character, and the initial intriguing premises, that did not make me stop watching it before the final credits.
In conclusion, American Ultra is a huge disappointment and total waste of time. Avoid even if there is nothing else to watch.
