Review of American Teen (2008) by Vincent C — 16 Aug 2008
Great elements of storytelling. American Teen isn't your usual MTV style high school film. Its overall impact imitates the viewers experience of life when they were a senior and that claustrophobic small town you want to escape from.
Filmmaker, Nanette Burstein does a great job at pacing and creating a film that feels like a real portrayal of High school by taking real people and situating them in somewhat fabricated moments (ie, read all the complaining locals who posted on the imdb message boards) . The five featured students are great. All are three dimensional and they keep the audience interested even hope to see them succeed. Especially Hannah's story.
The film in bits is noticeably staged. It somewhat ruins the experience when its obvious, unlike "King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters". All films are bias for to elevate a story, but the audience should never be aware of its presence.
Great high school film.
