Review of American Teen (2008) by Petr K — 01 Jan 2009
A lot of cliches covered in this film but all four of the central characters are given hidden depth, Hannah worries she'll turn out mentally unbalanced like her mother, Colin fears that he'll have to join the army, nerdy Jake is self-loathing and is worried about himself more than anything and angry popular teen Megan is worried about not living up to her parent's expectations and bottling the grief about her sister's death.
I'm thinking that Nannete Burstein was a bit like the Hannah character in school because she gets the lion's share of the sympathy even when she's bunking off school its because her boyfriend's left her and she's misunderstood.
Some of its obviously scripted but overall this is a warm depiction of American teenage life in a small-town and for us Brits is something new as we're not used to seeing this cliq-iness and self-hate.
