Review of American Splendor (2003) by Kyle F — 01 Feb 2008
Paul Giamatti is amazing. This wasn't quite what I expected, which is not to say that it was bad, but it just didn't seem to flow very well for me. Don't get me wrong, I loved seeing the real life characters, such as Harvey Pekar himself, but it seemed to kind of break you out of the movie and cut the film into pieces, which I found distracting.
The story is obviously captivating. It is as quirky as it is interesting, and out of his dull existence we are all able to find something to smile about. Unfortunately, there are portions of the film that just sort of drag on. I won't blame the script for these problems, as it is based around real life events and the mixing of movie elements with real life character segments had to be tolling, but at points the movie was almost boring.
