Review of American Splendor (2003) by Peter A — 06 Jul 2008
This could have been a masterpiece. Their big mistake? Having the real Harvey Pekar appear in the movie. Not just as a cameo but he's all over it and constantly yanks you out of the movie. This is the story of an ordinary Joe who gets fame and noteriety by writing a comic book about the mundaneness of his own existence.
Giamatti nails the character but is constantly upstaged by the real guy. By the way Letterman is an arse in this movie, (the real one).
