Review of American Splendor (2003) by Curtis P — 26 Jul 2009
This film is like an artichoke...there is a real heart at the center, hidden by many layers. The way it is written, it's a good film. Paul Giamatti's acting talent is really the "third heat" (It is fitting to quote 30 Rock here since Judah Friendlander is also in American Splendor, taking his comic talent to the next level) that made this film great, though.
He makes Harvey Pekar very human, something I could see very few actors pulling off with this much success and accuracy. As for Hope Davis, this is also the best film I have seen her in as well. She is a very underrated actress and their combined performances as Pekar and his wife Joyce were very moving and wonderful.
..an optimistic film with inventive use of animation and live action...once again, a terrific recommendation from a friend of mine that will sooner or later be added to my DVD collection.
