Review of American Splendor (2003) by Rhys T — 16 Jan 2011
More a series of vignettes than a narrative, 'American Splendor' attempts to translate the matter-of-fact reality of the source material and does so effectively. It's let down by a slight stumble in the third act, in which the film isn't sure how to finish the film satisfyingly without contradicting Pekar's work's message; life isn't about happy endings. Nonetheless, a subtle, enjoyable little stroll through the world of a curmudgeons Clevelanite (?).
Oh, and Toby Radloff (both real and fictional) is a delight.
