Review of American Splendor (2003) by Jon A — 19 Jan 2011
Not a poorly made movie, but the comic version is so much better (especially with a variety of artistic styles) that the movie just comes off feeling like a rom-com, puff piece of Penkar and 70's Cleveland.
Everything that is interesting about Penkar in the books is mellowed out in the movie. The first ten minutes are kind of fun for the mix of source comic vs live action vs actual commentary by Penkar. The first ten minutes get 4 stars, the rest gets 2.
