Review of American Splendor (2003) by Charles M — 01 Aug 2012
One of the best character based films that I've seen in years. I found everything about this movie and story interesting and it totally pulled me in. The movie keeps challenging itself with all types of intriguing style and integrated animation & real life counterparts seamlessly and masterfully woven together.
It never once takes you out of the story but yet it manages to achieve something completely original. Brilliant is a prefect word to describe what Giamatti did acting wise and just like Barney's Version, he effortlessly pulls off a complex character throughout multiple periods of that characters life, jumping from decade to decade and totally nails it.
The rest of the cast was excellent as well and also seemed to really embody the real life people for whom they were portraying. This film about the everyman goes above and beyond and cements Giamatti as one of the greatest actors of his generation if it wasn't already in stone.
This is probably one of the best character based films that I've seen in a long time. Do yourself a favor and SEE THIS MOVIE.
