Review of American Sniper (2014) by Melody L — 04 Jun 2015
A great disappointment since the movie got an oscar nomination. While the battlefield scenes are well made and the actors do drag the audience into the film a few times, our hero, Chris Kyle, is protrayed without a distinctive character.
He is a respectable man, like many other soldiers, but the movie doesn't quite explain why his story is adapted into a film, while others' are not. Of course, the film does add in his achievement a few times by mentioning the number of enemies he killed with his sniper, but these numbers only make the movie feel stiff and serve as an excuse for the making of the movie.
The film fails to explore deeply into Kyle's fear, terror and/or his internal conflicts, and his description is mainly a stereotyped soldier like how most of us, who have never been soldiers, imagine them to be.
This movie is about a symbol, and for those who want to pay respect to its real life character rather than looking for a great movie.
