Review of American Reunion (2012) by Terilee H — 26 Sep 2012
It is a risky job to bring back to life a franchise from 10 years ago, especially when the quality of each following installment was decreasing. Yet, American Reunion has kept its charm, memorable characters and it certainly succeeds to entertain. It may be exploiting the good old tricks of what made the first movie great, but it makes it in manner which brings good old nostalgic memories of the past.
As it could be expected, the movie deals with the well-known character, but ten years later. In terms of plot development the American Reunion brings nothing new to the franchise and its cliched and predictable development decreases the amount of true laughs. The only new thing to the whole movie is the "we've grown up" feeling which some of the character manage to deliver.
It is hard to say whether it is a consistency, or lack of originality, but most of the jokes are pretty much the same as in the previous installments. The same gross humor and gags, the same old love-stories and love problems are occupying the lives of the American Pie team. Nevertheless, there is a certain "wholeheartedness" in this movie and the audience will enjoy the way the friends realize that their lives have changed.
American Reunion is definitely not a great movie, it is not an original comedy which you would never forget or watch multiple times. Still, it is a movie paying tribute to the good old times, when some of were teenagers and it delivers more than decent Sunday evening fun and entertainment.
