Review of American Reunion (2012) by Lewis E — 25 Dec 2013
The original cast of American Pie return, only this time as working grown-ups who begin to reassess their own and each other's lives since they left high school. The cast may be original but the comedy sure ain't.
It basically consists of paying homage to the characters and quotable jokes made famous in the first American Pie, especially in the last quarter. No effort was put into creating something new, meaning it barely survives on the nostalgic value.
It rehashes the same forced sex-related scenarios as before but I'll admit that it raised a smile on a few occasions. It was obvious that Stifler was going to return as his usual self but I think this did work in favour of the film since the majority of the laughs are attributable to him; however it was not as effective as it was 13 years ago.
In spite of all this criticism, I credit them for getting all the familiar faces to return (this is probably more of a sign that the actors have had non-existent careers since the original). Good fun is there to be had for those who are a fan of the original so the 'Reunion' should adequately serve as a decent night in with the boys.
