Review of American Reunion (2012) by Bancho — 22 Sep 2012
Even though a considerable amount of time has passed since the first movie, and the franchise has been all but squeezed dry by straight-to-DVD quasi-spin-offs, the appeal of the American Pie brand is still intact for me. Then again, I belong to the Class of 1999 myself, and so it just may be nostalgia talking.
Though we've gotten several follow-up films after American Pie, American Reunion actually feels like the only true sequel to the original. It seems that special attention was paid to detail in regards to the first one, right down to the score, from Sum 41 to that infamous bass-driven porno cue whenever Jim is about to get into some kind of naked trouble. Plus, the gang's all here! Even minor characters from the series pop in for cameos. Like I said, nostalgia. And while the shenanigans may be toned down from previous installments, it kinda feels right. After all, we've all grown up.
